The consumption of gelato in Italy is 12 kg per capita + extra four kg of industrial gelato 2019 sales increased by 8% generating an overall turnover of more than 2 billion Euros (in Italy).
Artisanal gelato represents approx. 66% of the overall gelato consumption.
Over the past 70 years no other food product could boast the same exponential growth as gelato.
Artisanal gelato has proven to be “crisis-resistant”: it is loved by consumers, it has a price/quality relationship that makes it affordable by anyone – the average price of an ice cone is 4.50€ - it can be consumed as a yummy alternative to a light lunch or as a tasteful snack to indulge in.
THE PROFIT MARGIN ON ARTISANAL GELATO IS TOP-RANKING IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY, even higher than typically
high-profit categories of food products like snacks or cereals.
The gelato consumption trend goes towards premium, top quality gelato. Italy is the first country to clearly highlight this trend, but also abroad the consumption of high-quality, truly artisanal gelato is registering a record growth.
MOREOVER GELATO CONSUMPTION HAS PROGRESSIVELY DESEASONALIZED: in fact in Northern Italy (which accounts
for over half of the overall Italian gelato consumption), gelato is purchased quite steadily throughout the year.
The same trend is reported in several foreign countries, i.e. US, France, Germany.
